Onslow Vietnam Veterans Memorial

VietnamVeteransMemorial-High-sm.jpgThe Onslow Vietnam Veterans Memorial is dedicated to all men and women who served during the Vietnam War. It stands as recognition for the nearly ten million Veterans of the five branches of the Armed Forces who served active duty during the Vietnam era, nearly three million of whom served in the Vietnam theater.

With this memorial, our community remembers those 303,704 service members who were wounded in Vietnam, the many POW/MIAs who are still unaccounted for, and the 58,229 men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Lejeune Memorial Gardens is second in size only to the national Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington DC, and is one of only a few that lists all the names of the fallen.

The Memorial includes an entry wall with medallions representing each branch of the military, a walkway and bridge with French design, a glass wall with etched names of those MIA, POW, or dead. The Dome, completed in March of 2014, is the finishing piece of the memorial and caps the fountain.

The Memorial is located near the tall pines at the Lejeune Memorial Gardens in Jacksonville, North Carolina along Highway 24 near the gateway to the City’s downtown area.

Elements of the Memorial

The Entry Wall at the entrance of the memorial bears a medallion for each branch of Military. The Flags that fly above the Entry Wall include each branch of the Military, POW/MIA, North Carolina’s state and US flags.

The Bridge leading to the Dome, Fountain and Glass Wall is of French design. The French were our greatest ally during the Vietnam War. Just beyond the bridge are flag holders for each of the United States. Decorative lights illuminate the bridge and pathway.

VVM-entrywall-sm.jpgThe Fountain has 5 jets representing each branch of the Armed Forces. Each jet is lit with a different color which can be viewed best at night.

The Glass Wall circling the Fountain and Dome has the name etched of each of our 58,229 fallen Veterans from the Vietnam Era. Names are listed in alphabetical order for family and loved ones to find easily as they visit the site. A circle at the end of some names identifies our POW/MIAs, and the * symbol signifies that they have come home.

The Dome, completed in March of 2014, is the finishing piece of the memorial. The unofficial words from Taps is inscribed around the Dome.
