The Sturgeon City Institutes offer a unique opportunity for a life enriching experience against the backdrop of the successful Wilson Bay Initiative, a project helping to restore the habitat of Wilson Bay. Students have the opportunity to learn about leadership, science, media, biology, chemistry, engineering, and physics through institute programs. Instructors and guides are specifically chosen because of their subject knowledge, their concern for the community, and their experience with students.

Sturgeon City Institutes at Wilson BaySturgeon City
Sturgeon City offers year round opportunities in learning and fun. Schools, groups, and organizations are welcome to schedule a visit at this unique site along the banks of Wilson Bay. Summer Institutes & Programs 
The Sturgeon City Institutes offer a unique opportunity for a life enriching experience against the backdrop of the successful New River restoration. The Institutes are offered as a service of the City of Jacksonville with the cooperation of the Onslow County School system and are operated by Sturgeon City of Jacksonville nonprofit.

Students have the opportunity to learn about leadership, police sciences, biology, chemistry, engineering and physics through the various institutes offered.  

The 2016 Sturgeon City Institutes
Applications are now available for 2016, the Institutes will operate June 20-24, 2016, information is below. Offered this year are:

SCI LeadershipScience Institute
Designed to help develop the scientific method and to foster consideration of science as a career. It is open to 8th grade graduates. It has helped provide a successful entry into high school teaching of the scientific method and it has formed new friendships that have lasted through high school among some of the Institute Fellows.

New Generation Leaders
This is a new program designed to help build young leaders by empowerment, team building, and an understanding of our community. Activities include a community service project and many community visits. There area opportunities for team building, team leading, public speaking and project management. Mentoring will be offered and students can learn how to work with others to reach difficult decisions.

Science Academy
Science Academy is for students who want an intense experience with physics and engineering, marine science, medical science or chemistry, and even science in general. Students sign up for specialties, working with others and explore other topics. A teacher recommendation is required for the academy. The academy is open to rising high school juniors, and seniors who desire advanced learning. Sophomores may be admitted with special permission. The actual segments offered depends on the interest of the students who apply.

Police Institute
Active duty Jacksonville police officers share their experience of what it takes to become a police officer and how to investigate a crime and work at a crime scene. Students will help solve a "crime", visit the Justice Complex, and receive a behind-the-scenes tour of the police station in Downtown Jacksonville.

How to apply for this exciting opportunity:
  • You can download more information and an application here.
  • Applications are accepted at the Sturgeon City nonprofit each spring for the following summer
  • Institutes are free as a service of the City of Jacksonville
  • Institutes are open to high school students who want to learn more about their community and environment and improve their life experiences
  • It is mandatory that students attend each day of the Institute during scheduled hours
  • Some institutes may require additional information for consideration
  • Students in the Onslow County and Department of Defense school systems are given preference
  • Students must select only one institute to attend as they run concurrent

Participants must be able to certify they will be able to attend all days of the institutes they select. We are not able to accommodate students who cannot participate in all days of the institute.
