Citizen Academy

Jacksonville's Citizen Academy is designed to offer City residents who are interested in becoming more involved in local government and its activities, the opportunity to learn more about what city government does, and offers direct insight to the various city operations.

Jacksonville Onslow Sports Commission
The Jacksonville-Onslow Sports Commission encourages and supports sporting events, tournaments and activities that help in the local economic growth and development. The Sports Commission supports events like Jacksonville Jamboree, a three-day sporting event, Onslow Special Olympics, The annual Race for Warriors, as well as many other activities. Each year, the Sports Commissions inducts local sports professionals into the Jacksonville-Onslow Sports Hall of Fame at a ceremony banquet.

Nonprofit Assistance

The City believes that the nonprofit community is able to provide services to Citizens comprehensively and efficiently. In support of nonprofit efforts the city sponsors an annual Nonprofit Board Seminar designed to enhance professional development and provide resources.

The U.S. Department of Labor’s (DOL) new overtime rules mean that more employees of North Carolina nonprofits will be entitled to overtime pay when they work more than 40 hours per week. These changes, which take effect on December 1, will affect thousands of nonprofits in North Carolina. A U.S. Department of Labor Representative, David Heinen, Vice President for public policy and advocacy for the North Carolina Center for Nonprofits
will provide an overview of the new DOL rules.

Sturgeon City & Sturgeon City Institutes
The revitalization of Sturgeon City at Wilson Bay continues to be a project led by citizens and City Council. A Clean Water Management Trust Fund has been established and an Educational Center Built to further efforts. Educational programs are in effect year round for students and community groups. Each summer, Sturgeon City hosts hundreds of area high school students for the Sturgeon Summer Learning Institutes in science, biology, engineering, leadership, arts, and media.

Youth Services & Programs

The Jacksonville Youth Council mission is to engage, teach, and involve our young people in activities to help build an affinity for the community of Jacksonville and Onslow County. High school students from Jacksonville and throughout Onslow County join together at the Jacksonville Youth Center for events and activities. The JYC establishes priorities for community projects, musical summits, and charity events.

Youth Services also include HARMONY, a youth led philanthropic group that helps fund youth led projects in the area.
