What do I do with paint cans?: If the paint is still wet, remove the lid to air dry, or add enough dirt, kitty litter, or floor dry to soak up all the paint. Once the paint is dry, set the paint cans at the curb on your normal trash day for pick up. Please do not put paint cans in your trash container.

1. Can I place loose garbage in my trash container?: Solid waste collection policies require that garbage be bagged first and then placed in your container. This greatly reduces odor and litter. Bagged trash also keeps the container cleaner, thus reducing the chance of attracting flies, rodents, and other critters.

2. Does the city collect large appliances (i.e. washer, dryer, refrigerator, freezer, dishwasher, air conditioning units)?: Large appliances are collected once a week, but make sure to call Sanitation at 910-938-5338 to schedule a pick up. We will pick up two items per week at no charge. For additional items you may be assessed $10 for each appliance over the two-appliance limit.

3. How can I obtain a recycle bin?: Call sanitation at 910-938-5338 to obtain a recycle bin. The city provides two styles, an 18-gallon open-top bin or a 65-gallon bin on wheels with a lid. There is no additional charge to participate in the city recycling program.

4. How do I pay for my sanitation service?: The sanitation “landfill tipping fee” is part of your monthly city utility bill; the residential charge is currently $15 per month.

5. What day is my trash / recycling collected?: Call sanitation 910-938-5338 for your trash and recycling schedule. For holiday pick up, please see the holiday schedule. To assure pick up, please place your containers at curbside no later than 7:30 a.m. on your designated collection day.

6. What do I do with bulk items like a mattress or recliner?: Sanitation will pick up to three bulk items of like mattresses and recliners. If you have more than three items, you may be assessed a charge of $10 per item over the three-item limit.

8. What do I do with remodeling material?: There are a couple options here for disposing of remodeling material. If the amount is small enough to place in your trash can, please do so. If you have a larger amount, you can schedule the dial-a-truck. If remodeling materials is placed at the curb, sanitation personnel will inspect and determine if charges will be assessed by the city.

9. What is dial-a-truck?: Dial-a-truck is a service offered at no additional charge, providing for residents assistance in removing an excessive amount of yard waste or junk materials. The city provides a two-ton dump truck to be parked at your residence overnight or over a weekend to load with yard or junk materials. Scheduling for this service is based on availability, on a first-come-first-served basis.

10. What items are recyclable?: It's important to help keep the City's recycling stream clean in order to avoid a rate increase. Please refer to the City's Recycling web page for a current list of collectable recycling items.

11. When does the city pick up tree limbs and other yard waste?: The city's weekly yard waste collection is Wednesday of each week except holiday weeks. Curbside yard waste is vegetation only; tree limbs, grass clippings, pine needles, brush, etc. Small, loose items need to be contained in paper compost bags, medium-size box, or a container that is no larger than a 32- gallon size. Yard waste cannot be collected in plastic lawn bags. Limb or brush piles larger than one cord (4 feet by 4 feet by 8 feet) will be inspected by sanitation personnel to determine if there may be a charge assessed for collection by the city.

The dial-a-truck may also be requested for disposing of excessive amounts of yard waste. Sod, dirt and rocks are not yard waste and cannot be collected by city crews. The sanitation holiday schedule is available online.

12. Where do I place my container to ensure collection?: Waste and recycling containers should be placed within a few inches of the curb in front of your house by 7:30 a.m. on your scheduled collection day. Point arrows towards the street and at least 3 feet from other objects like a mail box or utility pole. Please do not place containers directly in the street where it may impede traffic.

Please do not place your container at the curb any earlier than 6 p.m. the night before your scheduled day or leave it at the curb any later than 6 a.m. the day following your scheduled day.

13. Will my trash collection change when we have a holiday?: Yes, it will change. The city provides several avenues of notification for residents. You can check the City of Jacksonville calendar that is delivered to residents yearly. Calendars are available at City Hall while supplies last. Call 910-938-5200 to see if calendars are still available. The city advertises schedule changes in the Jacksonville Daily News the weekend before a holiday. You may also view the sanitation holiday schedule.

The city offers Jacksonville Connect. Online sign up is easy and free. Jacksonville Connect is a city-to-resident phone system where the city provides automated messages to your phone relaying schedule changes and city alerts for your area.
