[ARCHIVED] Hurricane Matthew 9AM Update: Jacksonville Status

Water has receded that had blocked some streets in Jacksonville with others affected by downed trees and power lines. No significant injuries have been reported as a result ofthe storm and assessments of damage to the City is continuing.

Some City functions are still overwhelmed by the heavy rains. Combined with powerloss to about 10 wastewater pumping stations, some stations were inundated with heavyrains. The result of that is still being assessed.

There is no curfew in the City, but residents are asked to stay off the streets as much as possible so that crews can work to restore services.

With power out to about 7,000 homes and businesses in Jacksonville, it's also out for some intersections. Use caution when approaching an intersection without power. Without power to traffic lights, such an intersection should be treated as a four-way stop, with traffic only proceeding after checking for safe movement.

Also, some power lines are down across the street. Crews were to start working on restoring power this morning.

Many churches have delayed or canceled services and only a few places are open. Check before going out later.

The ground is still super saturated and some trees can still fall down after the intensive winds overnight. Caution should be used around leaning or swampy grounds where trees may be compromised.
