[ARCHIVED] Jacksonville Recreation & Parks, Herschel “Spyder” Pylant receives 2015 New Professional Award

The City of Jacksonville is proud to announce that the North Carolina Recreation and Park Association presented Herschel “Spyder” Pylant the 2015 Outstanding Young Professional Award on September 17 at the organization’s Athletic Director’s Workshop in Wilmington, North Carolina.

The Outstanding Young Professional Award honors an NCRPA member who has given outstanding service in the field of athletics to the recreation and park profession on a local, state, or national level, and is limited to those persons having served at least two years and no more than 10 years as a full time employee in the park and recreation field.

Spyder is an Assistant Athletics Services Supervisor with Jacksonville Recreation & Parks and been a part of the team since 2009. He has added new programs such as Youth Open Play Volleyball, Youth Smart Start Sports, and a weekly basketball clinic at no cost to participants in the youth basketball league. In 2013, Spyder assumed a partnership with a special needs group and now offers a Special Needs Baseball League in the fall. He also coordinated with MCCS at Camp Lejeune Marine Corps Base to offer a flag football league between the City and the Base.

Spyder hosts special events , plans, organizes, schedules, directs and supervises of all the department’s youth athletic programs and activities. He is also responsible for recruiting, contracting and training officials for all youth leagues.

Spyder is an active member of the Statewide Athletic Committee (SWAC), the SWAC Softball Chairman and Tournament Director for numerous SWAC Regional and State Tournaments hosted by the City of Jacksonville.
