There are several ways to observe the Memorial Day Holiday this coming weekend in Jacksonville.
Friday, May 27 at 8 PM- A Candlelight Vigil will be held at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Lejeune Memorial gardens. This event is open to the public and hosted by Rolling Thunder NC-5 chapter.
Saturday and Sunday May 28-29- Freedom Ride with Rolling Thunder Chapter XXXIV. This national motorcycle run event is open to Rolling Thunder members. Members of the public can enjoy vendors and entertainment throughout the weekend at the American Legion, 146 Broadhurst Rd in Jacksonville. The group will participate in rides Saturday and Sunday with a motorcycle ride escorted by law enforcement Sunday.
Sunday, May 29 at 12noon, Freedom Ride with Rolling Motorcycle Riders - Rolling Thunder Motorcyclists from the region will participate in a ride through Jacksonville and Onslow to raise awareness about POW/MIAs not just from the Vietnam era, but from all wars. The ride will start at 12noon at the American Legion in Jacksonville and wind through the City and County. route
Jacksonville Public Safety along with other area Law enforcement will be there to help guide riders along the route. Jacksonville Fire and Emergency Services and Swansboro Firefighters will have ladder trucks with the American flag by the Freedom Fountain in Downtown Jacksonville on New Bridge Street for the motorcade to ride under on their route. The public is welcome to wave and cheer them on as they ride by.
Monday, May 30 at 11 AM - Memorial Day Observance - Traditionally held at the Carolina Veterans Cemetary, this somber observance honors all those veterans who made the ultimate sacrifice. Hosted by Military Order of the Purple Heart Beirut Memorial Chapter # 642. This observance is open to the public and will be video recorded for broadcast on G10TV and made available on the City's YouTube Channel.
